It's the Weekend!!! - May 14, 2010
Hello,
Definitely a TGIF day! Loads to do this week. Travelling Monday, Wednesday and Friday, full on work, will be wrecked by next weekend.
So, other than cleaning up the flat and getting sorted, doing nothing else this weekend!
Hope everyone has a great weekend

Sunday
Well,Sharon,
Travel plans for the fellas are kaput for the moment? Can't we get a giant cork for that unpronounceable volcano? Yikes! I live near the aerial approach for incoming planes to the Philadelphia International Airpot(even tho'I am in New Jersey!), and noticed lessening traffic as the weekend went on. We knew that the old mountain was at it again! Saturday night, few international flights(we can actually read the airline logos!), many private planes, excited to see a Lear Jet overhead, and mostly national airlines, like Southwest, were to be seen!
Hoping for the best to get those guys out of Dublin tomorrow, and on to Austin...Mother Nature will have her way, I fear! Maybe she will be in a better mood in the morning!
Fingers crossed!
Cheers!

Sharon Browne:
Can you please just answer this very easy question before I buy tickets, book hotel accommodations, and travel 500 miles? Barring unforeseen illnesses, family emergencies, etc(all common sense reasons btw): are the soloists performing on this tour Keith, Paul, Ryan, Damian, George, and Neil? So simple, so easy to answer. YES or NO!
Thank you.
The answer to this question
The answer to this question is yes.
Thanks!

Answer to question
Actually Jojo, I wanted the answer to come from Sharon. And no I have not joined a CT Street Team. Thanks for your input however.

If you read Sharon's response below: http://cms.celticthunder.ie/node/526392#comment-102734 she clearly states that the lads are not being replaced.
So I think you are good to go with purchasing your tickets and everything.

Hope you have a great weekend and get all you want accomplished. I'm sorry about some of comments in the other blogs regarding the auditions. You know what you're doing. It's a business and you must be ready for contingencies (expansions, sicknesses, solo careers (in addition to doing CT), burn outs, etc.). I wish people could see that.
You are a busy bee; aren't you.
Take the rest when you can get it.
God Bless.

Thanks Sharon
While Phil and I love what we do and I know all the guys love what they do, we all work in the Music and Show BUSINESS. It is business, it's what we do for a living and we have to be business like about our work.
I think this sentence sums it up and I'm glad you said it Sharon! While many of us are understandably attached to Damian, Paul, Keith, George, Ryan and Neil, the bottom line is Celtic Thunder is a business. I'm sure you enjoy reading about how much the lads have touched our lives but you as a music producer cannot make decisions based on emotion but rather on what is good business-wise and career-wise. As long as the 6 lads are not getting screwed over in some way, I really don't see there being a problem here.
Have a good weekend (what's left of it) and safe travels to Texas for all of you.
Thank you, Ryan, for everything!!
Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
Thank you for clearing up the
Thank you for clearing up the whole audition thing. I completely understand the need for a second group of guys as understudies for the lads, being a voice major myself. It was just that, from the first explanation, that a lot of us had the impression that these new guys you were auditioning for were going to be touring over in Europe instead of the lads we've come to know, and, naturally, we felt that was completely unfair to them and, thus, were upset. Maybe we read into it wrong, I don't rightly know, but knowing that the reason for these auditions are to find understudies for the lads puts a fair few minds at ease, mine included.
Is there a way you can
Is there a way you can confirm that this second group you are auditioning for is not going to be doing the tours overseas in other countries instead of the lads? I do appreciate your explanation about the understudies, but I feel that the issue of the European/Asian/African tours hasn't been addressed, which is continuing to make people uncertain and uncomfortable, particularly those in other countries who want to see the lads perform. I think that, in addressing this, you'd really clear things up for those of us who are still worried about the future of CT.
CT in TX
A lot of mention of the lads coming to Texas soon ... both on blog and in their Tweets... anyone know if this is a "mini" tour or if they are doing some type of promotional.... are they performing for something that will be later available online or on television.... would appreciate any info

Hi Sharon
It's without a doubt that many of us owe you an apology for the way we may have reacted to the upcoming auditions. I know that many of the comments were fueled by the fear of losing one or more of our beloved lads. I can honestly say that I feel far more comfortable with things now than a few days ago. As I've said before we are so grateful to both you & Phil for bringing Celtic Thunder to the world. Without your hard work we would have never had the pleasure of knowing Damian, Keith, Paul, Ryan, George & Neil. This show has become such a huge part of our lives....I guess the possibility of losing the show as we've come to know it was difficult to accept. I've been a fan since the original Helix performance was aired on PBS in March 08', Celtic Thunder has had my support from the very beginning, as a Street Team member & as administrator of The Atlantic Canada CT Fan Page. My support will continue in the months & years to come. I hope in the future you will continue to share future plans with us & that our reaction to this has not affected the open communication the CT family has shared. It is truly a pleasure being involved in such an amazing adventure as Celtic Thunder. I wish you all the best in the future, & thank you for the reassurance that we are not losing any of our guys. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Take care. Cheers & best wishes from St. John's Newfoundland.

The guys aren't being replaced. They know they aren't being replaced.
EVERY show has back up plans, they just don't normally tell the fans anything about it!
We've a more open policy. Celtic Woman has given 10 girls the opportunity to shine, ALL of them talented and lovely.
They've had babies, got married, done exams, taken time out, had personal situations to deal with. That's life. Same with all the other Irish shows.
These comments, while understandable when everyone loves the guys, are NOT realistic.
If we didn't think the guys were great, we wouldn't have cast them in the first place and we wouldn't have waited 3 years to "replace" them. We are NOT replacing them. They have each had to miss important family and friend occasions and functions because we had no back ups for any of them.
They've gone on sick because we've had no back ups. We can't keep operating that way and as a business we can't schedule far into a following year presumptiously assuming that not one of the guys will be sick, not able to do the whole tour or not get an opportunity to do something else that would be advantageous to their careers.
While Phil and I love what we do and I know all the guys love what they do, we all work in the Music and Show BUSINESS. It is business, it's what we do for a living and we have to be business like about our work.
I'm sorry it's caused confusion, misunderstandings and upset. Perhaps the open policy isn't always such a good idea
Sharon

Thank-you!!
Thanks Sharon for clearing things up. You have always done the right thing and thanks for being so honest. The hardest job a parent has is letting a child grow up and setting them free to do their own things in life. In a way, you are like a Mom to all the CT guys.(I know age wise you are too young but symbolically, your are like their Mom.) You gave them a start but know at times you have to set them free. If they are sick or have something very important they have to do, they have a right to do that.
When George lost his Father-in-law, we are sure he wanted to be by his wife. If Damian gets a role in Glee, that's fantastic!! Stuff happens in life. Thanks for always thinking ahead and for thinking of the guys and their situations. We only want the best for every member of CT!!
Well
I think this was stated loud and clear- hoping you get the chance to move on and concentrate on the tour!

As dramatic as being open with us has been, I'm glad you are. I can only imagine if one of the guys was sick for a couple shows and there was an understudy that you HADN'T told us about in advance...

Hi Sharon, I know you’ve been getting a lot of flak from the fans about your decision to hold auditions for new members of Celtic Thunder. I want you to know that most of us realize that without you and Phil, we would never have gotten the opportunity to know George, Ryan, Paul, Keith, Neil, and Damian and they would not have had the success they have enjoyed so far with Celtic Thunder. I think most of us are grateful to you and Phil for the wonderful job you have done and for the unprecedented access that we have enjoyed with the guys. Having said that, I wanted to explain some things that perhaps you haven’t considered.
As an “original” fan, I’ve proudly supported the guys in everything that they have done. I have attended the shows; bought the CDs, DVDs and other merchandise; clicked my fingers off for “Lauren & I”; called the radio stations; written to Oprah and Ellen; written to the PBS stations; answered phones at PBS stations; went on two of Phil‘s cruises; attended both nights of the taping in Toronto; went to the parade in NYC; went to QVC; etc. etc. A LOT of CT’s fans have offered this level of support for the guys. I think that’s very unusual … yeah, most groups have “groupies” but not so many loyal fans that will go above and beyond to support them the way that Thunderheads support CT. And I, for one, have never supported a group at this level before in my life … but it has been my pleasure to do these things because I sensed from the beginning that these guys are different. They are not only amazingly talented but they are real people … down to earth, funny, friendly, nice guys who have shown that they care about their fans. They have allowed us to get to know them and to genuinely care about them as individuals. That’s due in part to you … you encouraged them to interact with us online and you were very smart to do so. When fans feel connected, they will offer more support. However, you have to understand that now we DO feel connected … and not to a group called “Celtic Thunder” but to George, Ryan, Paul, Keith, Neil, and Damian individually as the members of Celtic Thunder. And so a lot of us are upset because we feel that you’re treating the guys that we have come to care about as though they are interchangeable with any other handsome, talented guys. They’re not! And regardless of how quickly you may have to be ready for a world tour, or how profitable running concurrent tours might be, don’t you think the people of Europe, Asia and Africa will notice if they pay good money to see the guys on the DVD and they get five new guys instead? That doesn’t make sense to me … unless you plan on “mixing & matching” and including a few of the originals on the world tour while replacing them with a few of the new ones for the US/Canadian tour and thereby trying to appease everyone. I hope that’s not the plan because I don’t know about everyone else, but when I see Celtic Thunder in concert, I want to see George, Ryan, Paul, Keith, Neil, and Damian. They have worked so hard for you, Sharon. Don’t you think that every one of them deserves to take part in the world tour that they have been looking forward to for so long? Don’t you think that they have earned that? I don’t know of any fan that would object to not having a tour here in the US if the guys had the opportunity to tour other countries. We’d miss them, of course, but we’d be thrilled for them.
I understand that eventually one or more of the guys may want to leave to pursue solo projects, and when/if that happens, I’m sure a new member would be welcomed by the fans with open arms … but that would just be one new member at a time. That’s a little easier to take than five new members doing a tour that “our guys” have worked so hard for.
You’re a smart lady, Sharon. I realize that there may be a lot of things going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about (and that are none of our business). So, if you truly feel that this plan is for the best and makes financial sense, then obviously, do what you have to do. I think a lot of us are just asking that you consider all of the ramifications to this decision (not just financial) and praying that you’ll continue to do the right thing by George, Ryan, Paul, Keith, Neil and Damian, whatever that may be.
I hope you have a nice weekend and that everything works out well for everyone concerned.

Have to agree with Patty
I have been reading all the comments for days now and had decided to let things settle a bit before commenting. Patty, you have said it all. The guys, George, Ryan, Paul, Keith, Damian and Neil, are Celtic Thunder. I want them to succeed and get to do their World Tour. I have also followed, clicked, traveled, answered PBS phones, bought merchandise, cds, and dvds, cruised (twice), and promoted CT through Street teams (in 2 states). All for the original guys. I had not been listening to a lot of music before March of 2008. Once I saw CT on PBS, I had to learn more about them. I went to 7 shows the first tour: to see those guys. Yes, it is about the music, but THEY make the music so special. Patty, Barbara, Ro and many others have said it already, so I won't repeat. Just say I agree.

re: Auditions......
Patty, you couldn't have said it better! Yes, we all are grateful to Sharon and Phil for the wonderful job they did in choosing Ryan, Paul, George, Keith and Damian when they were looking to form a group of five Irish singers. BUT..... it has been the hard work & dedication, and most importantly, PERSONALITY of those five men that has endeared them to us over the past few years; not just the music they sing nor they way they look. Yes, Sharon can probably find a handful of other talented singers to replicate the sounds of "our guys" - and this would now include Neil (who has been with CT since the start and has developed his own unique style to "wow" us with) ..... but they will never be able to duplicate the feeling, attitudes, mannerisms, etc, that the guys have developed by working together for so long. It IS Ryan, Paul, George, Keith, Damian and Neil with their talent AND charm that draw the fans to the concerts.... over and over again! Quite honestly, I have never attended ANY performer's show more than once during a tour because I have never felt the need to spend hundreds of dollars to watch/hear the same thing more than once.... even if I have come out thinking it was an outstanding performance. This all changed after attending the CT concert at Radio City back in 2008! I attended two other concerts during that tour.... traveling hundreds of miles and spending additional money for hotels, and since then have seen CT in concert for a total of seven times - most requiring hours of travel and hotel rooms! I have already pledged for several concerts for the upcoming fall tour and I'm looking forward to attending these, not only to see the guys, but to also meet up with all the wonderful friends I have made along the way (to quote a certain Scottish singer we all know and love!) I, too, have clicked, called, written and volunteered at the local PBS station.... not to mention traveling to the NYC St. Patrick's Day parade AND to QVC, all in support of these fantastic guys! The operative word here is THESE guys.... not the music they sing or the image they portray under the name of Celtic Thunder. Musical groups come and go like waves washing up on a beach - but in order to develop any sort of loyal fan base, they have to have something that endears them to their fans.... otherwise, they will become yesterday's news very quickly. Our "guys" have done this with their hard work and wonderful personalities. They ARE Celtic Thunder and can not be replaced, replicated, duplicated or cloned. I can say for a fact that if they are mixed and matched for whatever reason, the magic that is CT will be broken; and for MANY loyal fans, the "je ne sais quoi" that draws us to so many concerts will be gone! Sharon needs to develop a battle plan for future tours - both here in the States and world-wide - that preserves CT as we have all come to know and love. This CAN be accomplished with some savvy negotiating on her part, even if it means a few less dollars in the CT coffers and a little less time with the guys here in the States. The "guys" deserve to experience their own world-wide success because THEY have earned it... not some second string stand-in wanna-bes! LET THE REAL THUNDER ROLL!
~~ Barbara
Well put....
Bravo well said ALOT of us feel this way....The guys make up Celtic Thunder not an image, not a product that can be duplicated when you need extra pieces and as they shout out in the song that Mr. Coulter wrote for them and I quote "WE ARE THE THUNDER" and that would be DAMIAN, KEITH, PAUL, RYAN, GEORGE..... and yes NEIL because he has been part of the thunder from the begining.
pretty much the way alot of us feel
I think this pretty much says it for the majority of us from what I have been reading. The men of Celtic Thunder have the talent to acquire world fame on their own should that become their decision. I read something totally horrific and not necessary else where on this site today. It is time to put the hatchets away and stop the attacks.
ha, you inspired me to do my
ha, you inspired me to do my work
haha
? just substitures?
My understanding is that the auditions are only for stand-ins when our CT lads cannot perform due to illness, other commitments, etc. The new schedule is strenuous!! I cannot imagine any one of them being able to perform every show, night after night and sometimes, two in a day.
Obviously, no one can replace George, Paul, Ryan, Keith, Damian or Neil. Just not gonna happen. But, I do not want them burned out, or unhappy and unable to pursue their own individual careers aside from CT. Too much of life will happen with them not present to experience it if they have to appear in every show.
I am sure that they will be given priority placement opportunity in the European and other tours. Germany, especially will respond so well to all these guys. But they cannot put their private lives on hold indefinitely. They don't need the pressure of feeling they have to perform, every show or tour every continent or country in order for the show to go on. Like The Ten Tenors, CT will just not be the same without the originals. I am assuming that now perhaps, they will be freed up to pursue individual gigs while in the US on tour? Or to enjoy more experiences that are denied them when they have to be "on" nearly every evening.
Am I correct in this?
additional tour dates!!!!!!!
Hi Sharon,
Saw that the fall tour schedule has been updated and now has a performance in RI. You must have been reading my mind. I meant to blog asking when CT was coming to RI. You have answered my prayers. Even though I already have a ticket to see CT in Oct in Boston, I plan to attend the performance at the VETS Memorial Auditorium in Providence. Hope the volcano activity does not keep the guys home-bound. Good luck in TX if all goes as planned and have a wonderful week-end.
Thanks
Dee
Enjoy!
Have a lovely weekend, Sharon!
auditions
I've read all the comments about the new CT auditions and the group that will be touring Europe, etc. It is obvious that there are some passionate followers of the original CT group. I am one of them. And I admit I don't know a lot about the business aspect behind a production like this, but my real concern is for the original lads. How do they feel about this idea that another group will be touring Europe, when they are the ones who have made CT so popular? To me, it seems like a slap in the face. Give them the opportunity to promote CT in other places besides North America. If they choose not to do so, then at least they were given the chance, and we would respect their decision.
Mesto
I was deeply saddened when I learned about the open auditions you are conducting to find a Second Touring Company for the five talented young men who are, and always will be, the true Celtic Thunder. You not only insult their talent and uniqueness by saying they are replaceable and it is primarily the Celtic Thunder show that people come to see, but you think we Americans are so selfish that we are unwilling to wait our turn, along with the rest of the world, to see the lads in concert.
Your explanations fall short and do not ring true. I cannot help but think your motives are monetary and have little or nothing to do with the physical welfare or the solo careers of Paul, George, Ryan, Keith, and Damian.
Not replaceable
Of course, the lads of CT are not replaceable! I don't get that at all from what Sharon has explained to us. Am I wrong in by understanding that The Celtic Thunder Lads, all 6 of them, are a part of the European Tour if they so choose to be? It is my understanding that the new auditions are for stand-ins, so that a show goes on in case one of them is not able or willing to perform in a specific show. Obviously, the grueling schedule assures that not one of the Lads will participate in every show. They don't need the stress of feeling they have to perform to their own detriment. I would like to see a much shorter list of venues - with more chunks of days off, with rich experiences for the lads - so the quality and integrity is maintained.
I assume that the contracts for the stand-ins ('under-studies'), are vastly less rewarding. If the personnel for the other continental tours are different, then the Group or show name needs to change. Otherwise, people will be misled. I cannot imagine flying to Germany for a CT show and upon getting there, learning that CT is not really CT.
At the same time, I don't want any one of the the Lads to feel obligated to undertake a tour for the benefit of the group.
Everyone has a different interpretation of Sharon's blogs
In response to Winter's Child, she understands the lads will tour Europe.
I've read over and over that Sharon says the current lads will tour the US. The new group Europe.
I've read they will be interchanged between the US and Europe. Some original members, some new.
I've read there are auditions for more than one group.
I've read MANY more interpretations.
I don't find Sharon's blogs to be clear at all or very comforting. Am I missing something? Each blog I have read is different and I'm getting more confused as many of us are with each new blog.
Everyone apparently has their own interpretation of what is being said.
Can somebody please clear up all the rumors?
George, Paul, Ryan, Keith, Damian, and Neil I remain loyal to you 6 lads. You are the men, the fantastic talent, the unmatchable sound, and the incredible personalities that make up Celtic Thunder and are irreplaceable as individuals or as a group.
:-)
Have an amazing weekend!!!!
