Dave Bakey hails from Gloucester City, NJ and has been playing and studying guitar from an early age. He grew up listening to experimental, alternative and rock music from bands such as Incubus and RX Bandits.
His dad gave him his first guitar when he was 10 and Dave started teaching himself to play by ear and with the help of some of his elder brothers and friends. He was a quick study and hs first public performance was a year later to a crowd of over 1,000 people at a school basketball game, where he played the Star Spangled Banner. From there he started his first band, playing local venues in Gloucester and Philadelphia throughout high school. On graduating Dave auditioned and was chosen out of a record number of applicants to attend the prestigious music school Berklee College in Boston. However he had just started his own band Tsunami Rising, and declined his place at Berklee to tour and pursue his career with the band.
Tsunami Rising has toured the US and Ireland successfully for the past 5 years, playing support its latest CD, called A Silent Springthis fall.
Dave met Keith Harkin when he was on tour in Philadelphia with Celtic Thunder and he later toured Ireland with him and Tsunami Rising. Keith introduced Dave to Celtic Thunder producer Sharon Browne and she asked him to join the Celtic Thunder band. Voyage is Dave Bakey’s first tour with Celtic Thunder. He is also featured on our most recent Public Television special.
